Introduction of IODD

The IO Device Description, commonly known as IODD, is essentially a standardized file format for describing sensors and actuators that are equipped with an IO-Link communication interface, for example. It describes the properties and functions of industrial devices such as sensors, actuators, and controllers in machine-readable form. IODD facilitates seamless integration and interoperability between devices from different manufacturers within an industrial network.

IODD files are not only mandatory for IO-Link devices but also serve as an "electronic datasheet'' readable by both humans and machines, providing a comprehensive overview of the device's capabilities and requirements. The IODD includes objects like Device Identity and Device Function, which contain user information, identification numbers, and descriptions of the device's parameters and functionalities. This allows for the description of product variants that may differ in order numbers but share similar parameters and communication features, thereby reducing the need for numerous device descriptions and conserving identification numbers.

The IODD facilitates the integration of devices into various automated systems due to its open standard communications protocol, which is supported globally by industrial automation companies. Its standardized format and adherence to international standards make it a cornerstone for interoperability and communication within modern automated environments. It simplifies the deployment of automation solutions, enhances system flexibility, and improves overall efficiency in industrial operations.

Technical Features

The technical features of IODD are specifically tailored to support the seamless integration, configuration, and interoperability of industrial devices within automation systems.

Structured Description for Automation Integration

IODD provides a structured description of devices, including detailed information about their types and functions. IODD conforms to the ISO 15745 standard, unifying device, and communication network profiles in one data file. This structured description allows automation systems to easily integrate devices across the entire system.

XML Format for Machine Interpretation

Using XML format, IODD documents are both human-readable and machine-readable. Automation software tools can parse and interpret these documents, extracting essential device parameters and configurations to facilitate automated setup and configuration processes. This machine interpretation capability streamlines the integration of devices into the automation network.

Communication Protocols for Data Exchange

Industrial devices communicate with automation systems using various protocols such as PROFIBUS, PROFINET, and EtherNet/IP. IODD specifies the communication protocols supported by each device, ensuring compatibility with the communication infrastructure of the automation network. This enables seamless data exchange between devices and control systems

Device Identification for Control Systems

Industrial automation systems rely on accurate device identification to manage and control devices effectively. IODD includes unique identification information for each device, such as model numbers and serial numbers which enables control systems to identify and address individual devices within the network accurately. It helps vendors to describe product variants with varying mechanical characteristics.

Diagnostic Information for Maintenance

Maintenance is critical in industrial automation to ensure the reliability and performance of devices. IODD includes diagnostic information such as error codes to monitor device health and detect potential issues proactively. This facilitates timely maintenance and troubleshooting activities, minimizing downtime, and enhancing system reliability.

Parameter Definition for Configuration

Automation systems often require configuring devices with specific parameters to meet operational requirements. IODD defines the parameters supported by each device, along with their allowable values and units. This parameter definition simplifies the configuration process, ensuring that devices operate according to the desired settings.

Advantages of IODD

IODD (IO Device Description) offers several advantages enhancing the integration and functionality of sensors and actuators with an IO-Link interface.

  • Multilingual Support

IODD files can include multiple language translations, which facilitate the use of devices by personnel in different countries, removing language barriers in understanding device operations.

  • Enhanced Productivity

By providing a method for device description and configuration, IODD contributes to increased productivity in industrial automation systems by reducing setup time and ensuring seamless integration. At the same time, it reduces a lot of paperwork since IODD acts as a digital representation of the device, it can reduce the need for extensive printed manuals and datasheets, contributing to environmentally friendly practices.

  • Time and Cost Efficiency

With IODD files, the configuration and setup of devices become more automated, reducing manual programming efforts and potential errors. This saves considerable time during system installation and commissioning, leading to cost savings. The diagnostic data included in IODD files allow maintenance personnel to identify and solve issues with IO-Link devices swiftly, decreasing downtime, which in turn increases efficiency and saves time.

  • Ease of Use

The structure of IODD unifies device profile and communication network profile into a single data file, simplifying device configuration and management.

Hilscher & IODD

As a market leader in the field of industrial communication, Hilscher offers a broad portfolio of solutions for industrial communication tasks. In addition to the netX SoCs developed in-house, embedded modules and PC cards based on them, as well as firmware for all common fieldbus and RTE technologies, the company also offers modern IO-Link solutions:

With its netFIELD IO-Link Wireless Master, Hilscher offers a gateway that integrates complex sensors or actuators into real-time Ethernet networks. It combines reliable IO-Link communication with flexible wireless connectivity. The gateway converts PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and EtherCAT into IO-Link wireless and vice versa. Two parallel IO-Link wireless transmission lanes enable simultaneous communication with up to 16 IO-Link devices. An integrated web server, OPC UA server and an MQTT client enable important functionalities such as configuration, diagnostics and maintenance.

The netFIELD IO-Link Wireless Bridge from Hilscher works as the counterpart to the wireless master, which equips conventional, wired IO-Link devices with the wireless function and can therefore be connected to the wireless master.

With sensorEDGE FIELD, Hilscher even offers a Edge IO-Link master solution with an integrated container engine that makes it possible to relocate the MQTT broker directly to the device and also start your own containers for data management.
