Hardened design for industrial use
The device series netPI, based on an industrial design of Raspberry Pi 3, serves to realize any applications of the Edge Automation. Model RTE 3 additionally includes Hilscher’s multiprotocol netX SoC which provides access to all popular Industrial Ethernet networks. Together with the powerful Pi 3 1.2GHz quad-core ARM CPU, the devices form a platform to carry out demanding tasks of Cloud, Industry 4.0, and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
Model netPI RTE 3 includes two additional Industrial Ethernet ports for the connection to systems like PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, etc. A slot at the bottom of the unit is provided for the insertion of extension modules for sensor/actuator networks such as RFID, digital I/Os, etc. as well as customer-designed modules.
To meet EMC standards EN 55011 and IEC 61000, netPI is housed in a robust metal chassis and - compared to a standard Pi 3 - uses two additional PCB layers. The radio antenna extends beyond the chassis for an optimum wireless transmission. A hardware Real-Time Clock (RTC) with a supercapacitor as backup power source is supported. A nonvolatile auxiliary ferroelectric memory (FeRAM) guarantees a zero-voltage-secure and fast data storage (model RTE 3).
The netPI system is based on an AppArmor-secured Yocto Linux environment. The system design complies with the IEC 62443 cybersecurity standard for automation and control systems. User access to the web GUI is possible only via https-secured connections. The device boots securely and allows system updates only via Hilscher integrity-checked software.
