Cybersecurity of manufacturing networks with CIP Security and netX 90

The protection against cyberattacks has become one of the most important topics in the age of digitalization. Companies have to protect themselves against malicious attacks from the outside. Attackers are smart and learned that corporate IT systems are well protected; however, manufacturing networks are much less well safeguarded. I/O networks are mostly unprotected what can cause e.g. message tampering, communication eavesdropping or unauthorized communication.

For this reason, the ODVA enhances the EtherNet/IP technology with CIP Security for secure communication between EtherNet/IP endpoints. CIP Security supports data integrity, data confidentiality, device authentication and device identity.

As ODVA member, Hilscher will support CIP Security with his newest multiprotocol SoC netX 90 that provides a superior solution with an unmatched protocol flexibility for a variety of industrial slave or device applications in the process and factory automation.

The built-in security features of netX 90 enable developers to apply a secure by design concept by building layers of security as outlined in the IEC 62443, coupled with built-in diagnostics to monitor operating conditions for IIoT-enabled cloud services, e.g. predictive maintenance. The intelligent software architecture of netX 90 allows the easy to use and easy to integrate technology of CIP Security, which is based on TLS and DTLS encryption.

At the sps smart productions solutions 2019, the ODVA and Hilscher show CIP Security with netX 90 in action. If you are at sps 2019, visit ODVA’s exhibit in Hall 5, stand 338 and talk our experts at the Hilscher booth at stand 130 in the same hall!
