Hilscher launches new multiprotocol comX 90 module for cyber-secure industrial communication

Hattersheim, 17. Nov. 2025 – Hilscher has introduced the new embedded module comX 90, a future-ready communication interface for industrial devices. The module combines powerful multiprotocol communication, integrated security functions and IIoT capability in a compact form factor – while minimizing integration effort. The new comX 90 succeeds the proven comX 51 and is based on Hilscher’s netX 90 communication controller.

Easy integration of industrial communication – backed by 40 years of experience
With comX 90, device manufacturers benefit from Hilscher’s decades of expertise in industrial communication. Based on netX technology, the module supports numerous industrial communication protocols for device-level communication (formerly “Slave”) using a single hardware platform, including:

Industrial Ethernet:

  • PROFINET
  • EtherCAT
  • EtherNet/IP
  • Open Modbus/TCP
  • CC-Link IE Field Basic
  • POWERLINK
  • Sercos

IIoT:

  • OPC UA
  • MQTT

Changing the protocol technology only requires a firmware update – Hilscher provides the corresponding protocol stacks. comX 90 is also part of the Hilscher platform strategy: hardware, software, tools, and support all come from a single source – a decisive advantage for customers who value long-term availability, investment protection, and efficient product development.

“With comX 90, we’re taking our communication modules to the next level,” says Simon Fischer, Product Manager for Embedded Modules at Hilscher. “Device manufacturers now have a secure, energy-efficient, and IIoT-ready interface that integrates seamlessly into existing designs.”
Measuring 30 × 70 mm, the comX 90 shares the same dimensions as the comX 51, making it easy to use in space-constrained devices. It also fits directly into existing solutions with an SPI host interface – no hardware redesign required, thanks to identical pinning.

CRA-ready by design – powered by netX 90

The Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) requirements have been considered from the outset in the design of the comX 90. Thanks to the integrated netX 90 network controller, device manufacturers can more easily develop CRA-compliant products. The built-in security mechanisms reliably protect data and communication at the device level without additional implementation effort.
Furthermore, comX 90 natively supports IIoT protocols such as MQTT and OPC UA, enabling direct data exchange between field devices, controllers, and cloud systems. This represents an essential step of netX towards Industry 4.0 applications.
With up to 65 percent lower power consumption compared to its predecessor comX 51, the new comX 90 sets a new benchmark for energy efficiency. The reduced heat generation eliminates the need for additional temperature management measures, such as fans in control cabinets. Its extended temperature range down to –20 °C also allows reliable operation in demanding environments such as cold storage facilities.

Development support with evaluation board and pre-certification services

For developers and users, Hilscher offers the comX evaluation board, enabling quick and easy testing of concepts and solutions. For advanced projects or completed products, Hilscher also provides pre-certification services for its netX-based products, including laboratory support.

These services help customers save resources during the complex certification process for PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and EtherCAT solutions, shorten development cycles, and accelerate time-to-market.
