Hilscher and Schwarz Digits launch Europe’s sovereign edge-to-cloud platform for industry

Hattersheim, 15 April 2026 – Schwarz Digits Cloud GmbH & Co. KG, provider of sovereign and GDPR-compliant cloud solutions for companies of all sizes and industries, and Hilscher Gesellschaft für Systemautomation mbH, a leading provider of industrial communication solutions, announced a comprehensive cooperation to deliver cloud-based services for industrial environments. Together, the companies are building a sovereign edge-to-cloud platform that securely connects industrial machines and plants with European cloud resources.

The goal is an open, scalable infrastructure that enables industrial companies, machine builders and OEMs to roll out digital services faster – without relinquishing control of sensitive operational, process and product data.
The platform addresses two of the biggest hurdles in industrial digitalization:

  • reliable connectivity for heterogeneous OT networks and machine environments
  • cloud usage under European sovereignty, security and compliance requirements

As part of the partnership, Schwarz Digits and Hilscher combine their respective strengths: Hilscher contributes netFIELD, a comprehensive edge and device management platform that enables centralized management of hardware and software in the Industrial IoT. Schwarz Digits provides the cloud infrastructure (also known as STACKIT Cloud) to deliver these services securely, scalably and with high availability – across public or private cloud infrastructures, and up to on-premise installations at the customer site.

Christian Tepper, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer at Hilscher

Europe needs industrial digitalization that doesn’t have to choose between speed of innovation and data sovereignty. With netFIELD, we contribute 40 years of industrial experience, bringing the necessary OT proximity, industrial robustness and a proven concept for centrally managing large device fleets. And now we combine it with a European cloud foundation that takes the industry’s sovereignty requirements seriously.

Thomas Rauch, Chief Technology Officer at Hilscher

The partnership with Schwarz Digits opens up new possibilities for us to provide our device management solution netFIELD securely, scalably and highly available in public or private cloud infrastructures. Together with Schwarz Digits, we can offer a solution portfolio to the German and international markets that sets new benchmarks in technological capabilities for secure, cloud-based networking of production.

Sovereign cloud is not a buzzword, it is a prerequisite for competitiveness. With this initiative, together with Hilscher we are creating an end-to-end path from the machine to the cloud – under the European legal framework, with strong security standards, and with a clear focus on open interfaces instead of vendor lock-in.

What the solution delivers

Secure OT connectivity & data acquisition directly at the machine (Hilscher netFIELD)

  • Edge gateways as “data routers” between OT and IT that capture, preprocess and transfer production data in parallel to running control processes.
  • Container-based applications (e.g., for protocol/data conversion, preprocessing, anomaly detection, condition monitoring, remote access) running on the edge device.
  • Complemented by powerful hardware such as edge gateways with container environments and IIoT apps for PROFINET, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP and other industrial protocols.

Centralized device and software management at scale (Hilscher netFIELD)

  • Remote management for machine fleets: secure commissioning, monitoring and software-based over-the-air (OTA) rollouts across globally distributed sites.
  • Standardized, containerized updates reduce on-site deployments and create the basis for new service models.

Sovereign cloud infrastructure & data hosting in Europe (Schwarz Digits cloud)

  • Operations and data processing within Europe, aligned with high requirements for data protection and sovereignty, security and auditability.
  • Building multi-tenant industrial workloads (e.g., data platforms, digital twin services, AI/analytics pipelines) with the goal of enabling flexible scaling without dependency on proprietary ecosystems.

Open ecosystem, open interfaces, “trust by design”

  • The joint offering is designed as a partner ecosystem: machine builders, software providers, system integrators and industry associations can contribute their own applications, connectors and industry solutions.
  • This creates a robust foundation for industrial data usage – even across company boundaries (e.g., supply chains, maintenance, quality data spaces) as well as reference architectures for typical IIoT use cases (e.g., remote service, predictive maintenance, energy & quality monitoring).

Why digitalization and digital services matter

Industrial companies do not digitalize only in “greenfield” environments: existing machine parks, long life cycles and different industrial protocols are common realities – while pressure is increasing to operate plants efficiently and securely, scale services, and provide software/security updates safely throughout the entire lifecycle. This is exactly where the two companies’ approach comes in: modular, industrial-grade and scalable – enabling safe, simple and cost-effective digitalization of machines and plants as well as the development of new digital services.

Benefits of a data-sovereign solution “made and hosted in Germany”

Hilscher has been an expert in industrial communication solutions for 40 years. The company from Hattersheim has developed netFIELD, a comprehensive edge management platform that enables centralized management of hardware and software in the IIoT. Together with Schwarz Digits’s cloud infrastructure, this creates an offering that combines data sovereignty and industrial scalability—from public or private cloud to on-premise scenarios at the customer site.

Closer technical integration and joint market initiatives

In the future, the solutions of both companies will be integrated more closely to provide users with easy-to-use yet secure solutions for connecting machines and plants.

This forms the basis for new digital services such as smart remote services, virtual commissioning, condition monitoring, predictive maintenance – up to shopfloor device management to support cyber-secure operation of connected components in machines and production, also with a view to future requirements such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). This also includes the use of modern AI technologies in the STACKIT Cloud.

In addition to the closer technological cooperation, Schwarz Digits and Hilscher will also carry out joint marketing and sales initiatives – such as trade fair appearances and marketing campaigns. Target markets primarily include machine builders, system integrators and operators of machine parks looking for competitive, future-proof automation solutions. With their joint solutions, both new machines and existing machine parks and brownfield plants can be integrated easily into modern IT-based infrastructures.

Hilscher is making the netFIELD solution available for use on the Schwarz Digits Marketplace with immediate effect. Interested software providers and system integrators are also invited to collaborate and participate.
