netIC – Serial communication interface for Fieldbus and Real-Time-Ethernet as DIL-32 IC
Simple field devices such as barcode readers, identification system, valve islands or analogue/digital I/O blocks will require a connection to Fieldbus or Real-Time Ethernet systems. Since these devices do not have high data throughput, the utilization of a serial connection such as UART and SPI from the communication module to the host definitely makes sense. The netIC is a complete ‘Single Chip Module’ in the compact dimensions of a Dual-In-Line (DIL) 32pin plug-in module and is the best solution for simple field devices with low data throughput.
It is based on the network controller netX and contains all components of a Fieldbus or Real-Time Ethernet interface with integrated 2-Port Switch and Hub. The netIC only requires a 3.3 V power supply and two RJ45 Ports with integrated transmitter for operation on a Real-Time Ethernet system.
With the netX technology the whole spectrum of relevant Fieldbus and Real-Time Ethernet systems is covered.
The netIC will always come with a preloaded firmware and thus is ready to use.
For changing the firmware or a first evaluation Hilscher offers an Evaluation-Board with appropriate documentation, example schematics and tools.
Flexible for all established Fieldbus and Real-Time-Ethernet systems as slave

The whole spectrum of relevant Real-Time Ethernet systems is covered by loadable firmware with one netIC.
This reduces the variety of hardware boards and therewith the administrative and logistic effort for the user. In addition it allows a quick response to customer requirements and to enter new markets, as always the right hardware is on stock and the Real-Time-Ethernet protocol can flexibly be chosen.
Simple host interface with Modbus RTU protocol via SPI or UART
The user data is transferred with simple read-write commands to the application via the serial interfaces SPI and UART. As serial protocol the well known Modbus RTU protocol is used. This allows one design for all networks, due to the consistent interface Modbus RTU. Furthermore it reduces the integration and development effort to a minimum, as compared to a parallel interface only view connections have to be realized on the board layout.
Direct I/O Data transfer via external shift registers for simple field devices
Alternatively conventional shifting registers can be controlled via a synchronous serial interface and up to 16 Byte I/O Data can be easily transferred. Therefore in simple applications no additional processor is required and reduces the part costs of the field device and allows an extremely compact design.
