Script language enables free programmable serial interface
September 2009: netSCRIPT is Hilscher’s new highlight now advancing the functionality of their protocol converter netTAP 100. Next to over 60 newly published standard protocol conversions from field bus to real-time Ethernet to serial protocol, netSCRIPT script language now additionally enables users to program their own serial protocols on the converter.netSCRIPT is based on the language Lua, freely available at www.lua.org. Lua appeared on the market 1993 the first time. With its openness in accordance with the General Public principle, its renowned references and the right of a cost-neutral usage, Hilscher has given preference to Lua instead of a self-programmed, proprietary solution having the demanding customers in focus. The small size of the language interpreter with simultaneously high processing speed makes Lua a unique instrument for implementing additional functions for exactly those embedded applications the gateway demands.
Comprehensive functions such as PortOpen(), -Send(), -Receive() are controlling the serial interface on one hand, the functions BusIOOpen(), -Write() and -Read() the data transport from and to the superior I/O network on the other. These communication functions let Lua become netSCRIPT - a simple tool for implementing proprietary protocols to link devices to standardized automation networks.
The netSCRIPT user interface integrates as DTM into the FDT/DTM based configuration and diagnostic tool SYCON.net. Program editor, variable manager, syntax checker and online debugger are complementing the engineering environment.
The netSCRIPT expansion makes the netTAP product line more flexible for customers than ever before. Customized developments and cost expenses for external services can be saved just in times with critical economic situations. netSCRIPT is supplied along with the configuration tool for netTAP 100 without any additional cost.
